In its original state the basement was wet and very cramped for head height, so much so that none of the team could stand up.
Through the centre of the basement are square columns that hold up the barrel arches, each of these had to be underpinned carefully along with the external walls.
The basement, in an 18th century hall was used as storage and a utility room. It was damp, often prone to flooding and very cramped for head room.
Aesthetic outcome was very important throughout the whole conversion, so everything was carefully considered with this in mind. The brick work was sand blasted to remove all paint, dirt and detritus that had built up over the life of the hall, to take the ceiling and central piers back to the original brickwork.
With the original head room of around 6’, in its highest point, the floor was lowered, and walls underpinned by around 4’ to give a massive space, which instantly changed the feel of the space. A new structural floor was cast, and a new entrance was created to the rear of the basement, with an external staircase built for access. The basement was waterproofed using a cavity drainage membrane system, linked to a sump and two pumps, linked via underground drains. The basement was then dry lined, insulated, had an under-floor heating system installed and fully plastered.
Finished in very classical style the basement was completely transformed and now provides a great entertainment space for the whole family.
